Ways to Make a Gift
Because people who are interested in supporting Heidelberg vary in the stages of their lives—recent grad, business executive, retiree—many options are available
to facilitate their philanthropic goals. Immediate gifts, pledges payable over time, income-generating instruments, and estate gifts fit donors’ individual situations and
carry specific tax advantages.
Gift giving options include:
- Personal or corporate check: made payable to Heidelberg
- Credit card: MasterCard, Visa, Discover, American Express
- Securities: public and closely held stock
- Pledge: payable over a period of time
- Income-generating gifts: charitable gift annuities and charitable remainder trusts
- Life insurance
- Wills: bequests

Endowments: Gifts in Perpetuity
Charitable contributions made to an endowment are deposited in an investment account and constitute a “corpus.” At the end of the fiscal year, June 30, a percentage of the income generated from the investment is distributed to the beneficiaries of the endowment for a specified use.
After the annual distribution is made, all remaining earnings are returned to the corpus and reinvested. In this manner, the corpus amount increases annually allowing for larger distributions each succeeding year and greater benefits to students.
Each of the three Campaign projects contains an endowment component. The Ohl Endowment will support the music programs and operating endowments for Adams Hall and the RAC will upgrade technology and facilities. By supporting an endowment, donors have the confidence of knowing that their gifts will continue to grow and provide perpetual benefits to Heidelberg, and the gifts, in turn, create lasting legacies for the donors.
Naming Opportunities
“Namings” are a way to recognize and thank donors who make a significant impact on students’ lives. When an individual, corporation, or foundation contributes financial support to construct a building, equip a lab, or fund research, for instance, the donor’s name is placed on a plaque commemorating the gift, and the area is identified thereafter by that name. The amount needed to name a room or feature is pre-determined by the college.
In both Adams Hall and the Recreation & Activity Complex, a variety of rooms and range of amounts are offered to alumni and friends. By naming a lobby, classroom, office, playing court, locker room, etc., donors help Heidelberg complete the project, while creating an enduring legacy for themselves or whomever they choose to honor with a naming.
