The President’s charge: Heidelberg University is facing several fundamental challenges that require immediate and bold solutions. To thrive and prosper, we need to increase the real and perceived educational value of Heidelberg to our current, prospective and past students. We need to continue advancing strategically to strengthen our Academic Excellence and the Student Experience. We must move the University to a more solid financial footing by increasing revenues and controlling costs.

I am asking the Academic Priority Leadership Committee to recommend significant ways to increase academic revenue and control academic cost. I ask that your Committee review Heidelberg’s programs and curricula to determine where and how more revenue and cost savings can be realized. In particular, please identify opportunities through:

  • academic program weaknesses (e.g., tracks, minors, majors) that should be downsized or even eliminated;
  • inefficiencies in the curriculum (e.g., low enrollment courses, similar courses that are offered by different departments, or courses that have outlived their usefulness) that should be addressed;
  • staffing ineffectiveness (e.g., ways to better utilize existing faculty resources or move people to another stage in their careers) that block our institutional progress; and
  • organizational reallocations (e.g., areas or departments that should be emphasized to achieve growth) that warrant shifts in existing resourcing.
