Duane H. Berg

With sadness, Heidelberg College announces the passing of retired professor Duane H. Berg, who died Oct. 31, 2007, at the Regional Heart and Vascular Center in Toledo. He was 69.

He was born Oct. 5, 1938, in Cavalier, N.C., to Harold and Lucile (Walstad) Berg. His mother survives in New Rockford, N.D. Also surviving is his wife of 15 years, Ruth, who is the OhioLINK coordinator and book processor at Beeghly Library.

He is also survived by a son, Duane Berg Jr. of Gurnee, Ill.; two brothers, Gary of Detroit Lakes Mich., and Ray of Reno, Nev.; and a sister, Caryl Schagunn of New Rockford.

Mr. Berg joined the Heidelberg faculty in 1979 as professor of business administration, accounting and economics, retiring in 2004. For many years, he was the advisor to the Sigma Tau Nu fraternity on campus, and had served as sound director for many productions in Gundlach Theatre.

He was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church in Tiffin. A graduate of Cavalier High School in North Dakota, he received degrees from the University of North Dakota and the Roosevelt college in Chicago. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served during peacetime.

The Rev. Jan Kucera, pastor at Redeemer Lutheran Church, officiated at the funeral on Nov. 4.

Memorials may be made to the church, the Isaac Walton League, the American Diabetes Association or to Financial Assistance for Cancer Treatment (FACT).
