The family of Art Professor James L. Hagemeyer has planned funeral arrangements which they have asked we share with the campus Community. As you recall, Jim passed away unexpectedly Aug. 23, 2011. He was 65.
A memorial service will be held at 6 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 8, in the Herbster Chapel. Jim’s family invites his Heidelberg colleagues, friends, and former students to this celebration of his life.
Jim joined the Heidelberg University in 1983 as associate professor of education and became the university’s only art professor. During his tenure, he taught all of the art courses and managed the Art Department. He was beloved by the several generations of students who learned to appreciate and love art because of his example and enthusiasm. A graduate of Bowling Green State University, Jim taught art at Fremont High School for 30 years before joining the Heidelberg faculty in 1983.
In addition to teaching, Jim led three delegations to China to teach at Tianjin Normal University. He also created and implemented a summer art enrichment program, called Summer Challenge, for local children.
He is survived by his wife, Diane (Krawetzke) Hagemeyer; two children, James Ashley Hagemeyer, M.D., and Jodi A. Richardson; four grandchildren; his mother, Alice (Klein) Hagemeyer; and two sisters, Darlene Lentz and Sue Houtz.
The family suggests memorial contributions to the Heidelberg-Tianjin exchange program at Heidelberg.
