Although Heidelberg will be closed Jan. 16 in observance of the Martin Luther King holiday, many on campus will participate in a day of service as a way to transform Dr. King’s life and teachings into community action.
Students, faculty and staff will spread out in local churches, agencies and organizations in need to perform community service projects – a “day on” in service rather than a “day off” in rest.
The Heidelberg community will join Americans of every age and background in service to strengthen communities, empower individuals, bridge barriers and create solutions. The day of service begins at noon with an opening ceremony in the Wickham Great Hall.
Monday evening, the campus is invited to the Tiffin-Seneca County community dinner and service to celebrate the life of Dr. King. Heidelberg is jointly sponsoring the event with Tiffin University and community members. Dinner is at 6 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, 75 N. Sandusky St.
Reservations are required for dinner. There is no charge for the first 20 students who make a reservation. The cost for faculty and staff is $10 per person and $5 for children 4-10. Reservations are required by Thursday, Jan. 12, and can be emailed to lkagy@heidelberg.edu.
During the evening program, the annual Martin Luther King Jr. Peacemaker Awards will be presented.
The campus community will come together again on Tuesday, Jan. 17, for the annual MLK celebration. The program will be based on the new Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial, recently dedicated in Washington, D.C. “Out of a Mountain of Despair: A Stone of Hope – Bringing the King Memorial to Life” is the designated theme.
A Reader’s Theatre will celebrate 14 quotations from Dr. King. Clyde W. Pickett, director of the Office of Multicultural Development at Ohio Northern University, will offer a call to action.
The program begins at 11 a.m. in Ohl Concert Hall. Everyone is encouraged to attend.
