TIFFIN — With most students away for the summer, Heidelberg University is preparing for the arrival of former students. Each year, the university hosts Alumni Weekend for its graduates to reconnect with one another and with their alma mater.
Many activities are planned for the estimated 500 people set to return to the campus this weekend. Based on the theme “To Heidelberg and Beyond,” alumni will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of events including a picnic dinner Friday night with entertainment by Rusty Vinyl, Classes Without Quizzes, the annual alumni luncheon with a performance by the Alumni Choir and presentation of the 2011 alumni awards.
Other important events include the Medallion Club luncheon that honors those who have been graduated for 50 years or more and the class reunion dinners. This year, the class of 1961 will celebrate the golden anniversary of its graduation from Heidelberg and classes whose graduation years end in 1 and 6 will celebrate reunions.
Other weekend highlights include a tree-planting ceremony in remembrance of alumni who have died in the past year, campus tours and a book signing. In conjunction with Alumni Weekend, the Excelsior Men’s Society, the oldest Greek organization on campus, will celebrate its 160th anniversary with a series of events. The Heidelberg Board of Trustees will hold its spring meetings Thursday and Friday, and the Alumni Council also will hold its semi-annual meeting on Sunday. Several alumni networks also will be meeting.
