UCC president on campus
The Rev. John H. Thomas, general minister and president of the United Church of Christ, spoke about the rich heritage of the church as well as its direction
when he reflected on this summer’s General Synod, during a talk at Heidelberg College on Oct. 1. As the UCC celebrates its 50th anniversary, Rev. Thomas was on campus as part of the Northwest Ohio meeting of the UCC. He explained that three themes emerged from the Synod meeting: the challenge of reflecting on the legacy of the church while embracing its future; claiming with joy and confidence the progressive representation of the faith; and welcoming with hospitable hearts those for whom these shifts continue to be difficult. While the first phase of the UCC’s God is Still Speaking initiative is completed, churches are moving onto new phases that include such items as more contemporary worship music and engaging in larger public issues of faith. Heidelberg has a long and rich association with the UCC.
