Volleyball victory over cross-town rival
Senior Night at the Berg turned into the Heidelberg College volleyball team earning a 3-1 (30-28, 27-30, 30-12, 30-15) victory over cross-town rival Tiffin University. Ending their final regular season home match on a high note was Laurie Patrick, Kristy Bollenbacher, Whitney Magers, Tracy Sutter, Kendra Orwig and Katie Jones.
The win improved Heidelberg to 23-8 overall on the year and 7-0 in Seiberling Gymnasium, while Tiffin fell to 10-25. The 23 wins ranks third all-time in program history.
Head coach Jason Miller relied on his senior leadership to start the match and it proved to be a success as Magers and Jones helped to put Heidelberg out to an early 3-1 lead. Game one turned into a back and forth battle with neither team leading by more than three points. The Berg pulled out the win courtesy of two straight TU errors.
In game two, Heidelberg jumped out to an 8-4 lead, forcing a Tiffin timeout. Following the timeout, TU recorded two straight points and the two teams battled back and forth knotting the game at 21-21. Tiffin went on to register a kill to break the tie and never relinquished the lead to take game two, 30-27.
The momentum swung back to Heidelberg in game three. Heidelberg once again took an early lead behind the serving of Magers, but never let down, cruising to the 30-12 win.
The Magers sisters, Whitney and Morgan, got things going in game four, scoring four of the first eight points for Heidelberg. Whitney Magers registered two kills, while Morgan Magers tallied two service aces. Heidelberg extended its lead to 15 points on two TU errors and finished on top 30-15.
Leading the way on the night was Patrick with 15 kills followed by 13 from Whitney Magers and 12 courtesy of Jones. Morgan Magers dished out 43 assists, while Orwig led the back row with 20 digs.
Heidelberg resumes Ohio Athletic Conference play on Saturday at Mount Union College. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m. Heidelberg and Mount Union currently sit in a tie for second place in the league standings at 7-1. Following Saturday Heidelberg will makes its 16th appearance in the OAC Tournament. The Berg will be seeded either No. 2 or No. 3 based on its outcome on Saturday. One thing for certain is that Heidelberg will host a quarterfinal match on Tuesday, Oct.30, at 7 p.m.
