A prayerful gathering

Eight local pastors and ministers representing diverse denominations came together Tuesday for the first of a series of monthly prayer meetings organized by senior James Maxwell, who’s also serving as interim campus minister at Heidelberg.

“There is an incredible movement for God on college campuses,” said Mike Sooy, a Heidelberg alumnus who’s the worship minister at Old Fort Church. “Any time you can get this many churches together, it’s amazing.”

Rev. Jan Kucera, pastor of Redeemer Lutheran Church, commented that the prayer meeting was “a neat rallying point” with two colleges in town.

Seated in a circle, the ministers began the prayer meeting with Sooy leading them in song. Maxwell read several Scripture passages, and expressed his thankfulness for the ministers, for their time together and for the meeting to rejuvenate them in their work. Each participant offered his thoughts and asked for God’s presence on a variety of levels from balance in our lives to the needs of the community, from vision for their churches to awakening within their churches, the community and individually.

“It’s incredible to have the opportunity and the freedom and the ability to gather like this,” Sooy said. “We ask for comfort and peace in life in general.”

In his closing remarks, Maxwell asked that God’s spirit follow each person. He said he hopes to organize the prayer meetings on a monthly basis.
