'Berg on the offensive in Seiberling
Seiberling Gymnasium, located on the campus of Heidelberg College, featured an offensive outburst by the women’s basketball team tonight in a 78-50 non-conference win over Earlham College. The 78 points in the win is the highest point total in a game on the year for the Berg and aiding in the scoring was second chance opportunities courtesy of 27 offensive rebounds. In the end, Heidelberg out rebounded the Quakers 57-31 overall, including 27-9 on the offensive glass.
The win improves Heidelberg to 4-4 overall on the year and extends the Berg’s non-conference home winning streak to 12 games. Dating back to the 2003-04 season, Heidelberg is 29-7 in non-conference games played, including 12-0 in Seiberling.
Heidelberg held a 5-4 lead in the early going and went on a 10-0 run to take control of the game at 14-4 with 13:03 left in the first half and never looked back. The home team’s lead was extended to 18 points on an Amanda Campbell three, but Earlham battled back to pull within 10 points, 29-19, with 5:16 left in the first period. Heidelberg closed the half on a 12-4 run to hold a 41-23 advantage at the break.
In the second half, Heidelberg’s defense held Earlham at bay, never allowing the Quakers any closer than 17 points. A Maureen Hunter three-pointer put Heidelberg on top by 25, 56-31, with 12:25 left in the game and the Berg’s offense kicked into overdrive and extended its outcome to 78-50.
For the second-consecutive outing, Hunter came off the bench to lead the Berg in scoring with 16 points, to go along with six assists and four rebounds. Also scoring in double figures was Brittany Skolnicki and Campbell with 15 points apiece. Stacey Richard grabbed 10 rebounds, while Jenny Miller finished with eight.
Leading the way for Earlham was Jayana Sims with 10 points and Tracy Hill with 11 rebounds and eight points.
Heidelberg returns to action at Bluffton University on Dec. 21. Tip-off is slated for 7:00 p.m.
