Records Fall as 'Berg Wins Third Straight

The Heidelberg College women’s basketball team made itself at home at Bluffton University Friday night in a 71-60 victory. Not only did the team secure its third-consecutive win, but juniors Brittany Skolnicki  and Morgan Harrigan set two new school records en route to career scoring nights.
 
Skolnicki shot 15-of-23 from the field for a career-high 33 points. Her 15 made field goals set a new Heidelberg single-game record, surpassing the mark of 14 set by Diedre Stauffer during the 1981-82 season. Harrigan backed Skolnicki with a career-high 21 points on a 7-for-10 showing from long range. The seven made three-pointers tops the single-game mark of six held by five individuals, including Harrigan a season ago.
 
A Skolnicki three-pointer with 16:48 on the clock in the opening half gave Heidelberg an 8-5 lead which would build to as many as 11 points, 27-16, with just over six minutes to play in the half. Bluffton outscored the Berg 12-4 to pull within 31-28 at the intermission.
 
Harrigan sank five of her seven three-pointers in the first 13 minutes of the second half to give Heidelberg control of the game. The Berg led by as many as 12 points on three different occasions and the final buzzer sounded with Heidelberg securing a 71-60 win.
 
Backing Skolnicki and Harrigan in the point’s column was Maureen Hunter with eight points to go along with five rebounds and five assists. Harrigan and Amanda Campbell each dished out five assists. Campbell led the way on the glass hauling in a game-high 10 rebounds.
 
Leading the way for the Beavers was Angie Lee with 17 points and Kim Miller with eight rebounds and seven points.
 
The win improved Heidelberg to 5-4 on the year, while Bluffton falls to 6-5. The Berg will return to action on New Year’s Eve for a 2:00 p.m. tilt with Cornell College in Seiberling Gymnasium, on the campus of Heidelberg.
