Scholarship winner headed to Spain

Senior Beth McDermott is heading overseas this semester to study in Sevilla, Spain. A $1,000 merit scholarship from the Center for Cross-Cultural Study in Sevilla will help with her studies.

A public relations, Spanish and English writing major from Medina, Ohio, Beth received the scholarship based on grade-point average and two essays she wrote. In the first essay, she wrote about her academic background and goals, and how studying at the center would help her meet her goals. In the second, a personal statement, she discussed how her background and life experiences – including social, cultural, familial and educational – motivated her to pursue study abroad at the center.

Beth will be joined by seven other Heidelberg students who will be spending the spring semester in Sevilla: Johanna Glas, Jen Wendel, Chris Washko, Raul Mendez, Cassie Marich, Kim Kubly and Alyssa Miller.

The semester is Sevilla is one of a variety of study abroad opportunities available to Heidelberg students who can choose to spend a semester, a summer or a year abroad. Others include the American Junior Year at the University of Heidelberg in Germany, the Oxford Study Abroad Program and others across the globe. Heidelberg faculty members regularly lead classes on shorter-term trips.
