Dramatic tribute to Dr. King

A stirring performance of two African American spirituals by the Concert Choir, under the direction of Dr. Grant Cook, set the stage for a moving and artistic tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Tuesday on campus. Junior Benjamin Lupo conducted the choir in “Same Train” and “Rockin’ Jerusalem” and those in attendance joined throughout the program to sing verses of “We Shall Overcome.”

In reflecting on the importance of the observance, President Dottavio tied Heidelberg’s mission – living a life of purpose with distinction – to King’s dream. “Every one of us is part of our mission statement and every one of us is part of living Martin Luther King’s dream,” he said. “I encourage each of us to think about our commitment to education, to leading a life of purpose with distinction, and how that truly will honor Dr. King’s dream.”

Several students gave dramatic readings as part of the tribute. They included David Glover, who drew upon the words of the late Robert F. Kennedy, who broke the news of King’s assassination  to a gathering of African Americans in Indianapolis on April 4, 1968. Jessica Evans used King’s own words, as well as other poetry in her reading, titled “The Struggle and the Dream Continue.” Celeste Goliath concluded the student presentations with “The Funeral of Martin Luther King, Jr.” Seniors Joe Worthy emceed the event and James Maxwell led the group in an invocation and a benediction. Dr. Doug McConnell provided piano selections and accompaniment.

The annual program was organized and sponsored by the Academic Enhancement Committee, the Black Student Union and the departments of Music and Communication and Theatre Arts.
