One Way ticket to Big (spring) Break
A group of student musicians, led by alumnus Mike Sooy, are headed south for a little fun in the sun during spring break. But they have another mission: helping other college students to connect with God through their music.
One Way – a contemporary Christian rock band comprised of Nolan Baum, Matt Hartman, Justin Jacobs and Joel Perez, a former ‘Berg student, along with Sooy – was selected as the worship band for Campus Crusade for Christ’s Big Break in Panama City, Fla., the week of March 8-15.
“For us to get picked, it’s pretty huge,” said Baum, One Way’s drummer. He explained that the band sent in an audition tape after he attended the conference last year and learned of their selection earlier this school year.
The band, which has been playing together for about a year, had to prepare 36 songs they’ll play for morning and evening worship services during Big Break. Baum, who is One Way’s drummer, said most of the selections are common worship songs such as “No One Like You” and “Endlessly.”
About 10 other Heidelberg students will join the estimated 700 college students who will to attend Campus Crusade for Christ’s conference, which is the second of four scheduled during the annual college spring break. While there the students will spend time exploring their faith in evangelism training and learn how to talk to their peers about their faith. They’ll listen to speakers, attend seminars and experience Christian outreach on the beach.
The band, which plays for a small group of students every Monday night as part of the Campus Fellowship gatherings, is looking forward to a much larger audience. “We’ve never played for 700 people before,” he said. “We just want to have fun on stage. It should be an awesome experience.”
