Honoring senior research

If you saw a group of students dressed in suits, headed toward Herbster Chapel this week, you were undoubtedly looking at senior Honors students who were making last-minute preparations for a very big event.

On Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, the students presented their senior honors projects, the culmination of research into a topic in their major field and the final requirement in the Honors Program.

In their final year, Honors students complete these projects, working closely with a faculty mentor of their choice. This project is designed to individualize and deepen a student's understanding of a topic of compelling interest in her or his major.

Fourteen Honors students presented research on such far-ranging topics as political science and music, digital media, accounting and education.

The students and their topics they presented are as follows:

  • Shannon Tiernan – “Politics of Race and Gender: The Campaigns of Shirley Chisholm and Hillary Clinton
  • Honoree Pouly – “Composing Death: Anne Sexton’s Life, Work and Influence on the Music of Eric Chasalow"
  • Whitney Buterbaugh – “Your Roof, Your Roof, Your Roof is on Fire: A Forensic Study of Arson”
  • Devon Walsh – “Print-on-Demand: Bridging the Gap Between Print and Digital”
  • Valerie McElhannon – “Audit Standard No. 2 vs. Audit Standard No. 5”
  • Walter Scott – “The Sarbanes-Oxley Effect”
  • Holly Romelfanger – “GASB34”
  • Todd Post – “International Accounting Convergence: Converging to Simplify?”
  • Andrew Sather – “48 Years Later: The Business of Higher Education”
  • Nikki Lagandyk—“Dirt Don’t Hurt: The Antibiotic Properties of Bacteria Found in Soil”
  • Chad Mick – “The Reunification of a Nation”
