Koinis medals at OAC Championships

Having just completed his first season as a Heidelberg golfer, Zack Koinis also engraved his name in the ’Berg record books as the first Student Prince to medal at the Ohio Athletic Conference Championships. As a whole, the Berg, led by head coach Jim Troha, finished fifth and placed two in the top- 0 of the competition. It is the seventh time the Berg has posted a top-five finish and was its best finish since 2001.

Koinis, who came into the competition standing fourth in the OAC with a stroke average of 74.9, emerged the on top with a score of 151. He shot 76 in his first round and knocked a swing off in the second to finish with a mark of 75. Koinis slipped by Jason Nussbaum from Mount Union by one stroke to take the title and the medal. It is the first time a Heidelberg golfer has placed in the top 10 since Garrett Humes placed ninth in 2004.

David Lilly tied with Ben Kretz from Ohio Northern University for sixth with a cumulative score of 155. Both Koinis and Lilly earned All-OAC status with their finishes, overall the sixth time ever that Heidelberg has had multiple All-OAC golfers.

Rounding out the day for the Student Princes was Kevin Lenhart , who just missed a top-20 finish by two strokes and finished with a final tally of 164 for 21st place. He was joined on the green by Craig Meyer (Norwalk, Ohio / St. Paul) and Chad Waleryszak, both ended with a score of 178.

Troha, in just his second year, has seen his team move up every season in OAC competition. The year before he took the position, the men finished last in ninth place, last year they came in eighth, and now have grabbed a top-five finish.
After the final results were tabulated, Troha commented “I am extremely proud of Zack and David and their performances in the OAC Championships. Zack especially had a great tournament, and it is particularly special that he is the first ’Berg golfer to take the whole thing.”
