Alumni Weekend: Convergence of classes
Later this month, several hundred alumni will “Journey to Heidelberg” to celebrate Alumni Weekend 2008. They’ll reconnect, reminisce, sing, laugh and honor successes and achievements. They’ll even go back to class – but there will be no exams or grades.
One of the highlights of the June 19-22 Alumni Weekend will be the soulful sounds of the Mystics, a student vocal group that performed regionally in the late 1960s and early 1970s. At Alumni Weekend 2007, the band members reunited for the first time since their student days, and their performance was such a huge hit they agreed to take the stage again this year. Their performance will be Friday night, June 20, in conjunction with a BBQ picnic dinner for alumni and guests. The official kickoff to Alumni Weekend will be the annual Heritage Society dinner in honor of alumni and friends who are benefactors of the college through planned giving. On Friday, June 20, the college will honor members of the Medallion Club – those alumni who are celebrating (or have celebrated) the 50th anniversary of their graduation from Heidelberg.
The spotlight will shine most brightly on the 50-year Class of 1958. As part of the class’s celebration, they will present their class gift, a four-panel
bronze sculpture depicting “The Essence of the Liberal Arts.” David Drake, class president and newly elected trustee, coordinated the 50-year effort. Although the sculpture is scheduled for installation on June 12, the formal dedication will be held June 21 during Alumni Weekend festivities. The sculpture will be centrally located in front of the Campus Center and beside the science complex.

Alumni will gather en masse Saturday for the colorful Parade of Classes, prior to the alumni luncheon. During the luncheon, the college will present the annual alumni awards to individuals and families for their contributions to their careers, their communities and the college. Capping off the luncheon will be a stirring performance by the Alumni Choir, a popular tradition that began about 15 years ago. Each of the reunion classes will gather for individual dinners on Saturday night. A worship service, a Class of ’58 brunch and the Alumni Council annual meeting will conclude the busy weekend.
