Latta learns about lab

Fifth District Congressman Bob Latta’s first visit to campus Thursday had an important purpose. While in town, the congressman toured the Heidelberg’s National Center for Water Quality Research to learn about the lab’s research and view its facilities.

Lab manager Jack Kramer explained the lab’s various research initiatives and gave Latta a briefing on the equipment. Founded in 1969, the NCWQR is a leader in surface water and groundwater research in the Great Lakes region and beyond. Located in Gillmor Science Hall, the lab’s staff performs high-quality chemical analysis for fresh-water samples as well as biological assessment of aquatic communities. Latta said it’s important for him to understand the lab’s programs and goals.

Lab director Dr. Gary Winston said he invited Latta to visit the lab as a sort of give-and-take. Winston and other lab officials wanted the congressman’s input and advice on funding directions for the lab, which is funded primarily by outside sources. He said he hopes Latta’s visit – as well as an upcoming visit and tour by Sen. George Voinovich – will help the lab identify future funding sources.

It wasn’t the first time Latta and Winston had met. The lab director visited the congressman in his Washington, D.C., office in June.

Latta, R-Bowling Green, is filling the unexpired term of the late Congressman Paul Gillmor, who is the namesake of the building where the lab is located.
