A glimpse into state government

A delegation of Heidelberg student leaders and administrators got to see government in action Tuesday (Feb. 24) when they participated in Independent College Day at the state capital.

The Heidelberg group joined nearly 150 other independent college students and their advisors for a unique opportunity to meet with representatives and senators from their schools’ districts as well as those from their hometown districts in Ohio. The event is being hosted by the Association of Independent Colleges and Universities of Ohio.

“Students have the ears of their representatives and senators and will use this opportunity to take a stand on higher education legislative action in Ohio, from aid programs to research funding,” said C. Todd Jones, AICUO’s president.

Students participating in Independent College Day also toured the Statehouse, heard an update on the current political atmosphere in Ohio and attended committee meetings throughout the day.

Those attending from Heidelberg included students Amanda Neubauer, Trisha Meier, Allyston Stanton, Jingjing Wang, Xueying Zhong, Keenan Jones, Stephanie Gross, Deven Siesel, Kirk Shellhouse, Zaia Thombre, Shuang Wu and Joseph Rourke. They were joined by Dr. David Weininger, senior vice president and dean of the university; Lindsay Sooy, director of admission; Dustin Brentlinger, dean of students; and Meredith Edwards, admission counselor.
