Heidelberg celebrates athletic training month
Throughout the month of March the athletic training faculty and staff at Heidelberg University have celebrated National Athletic Training Month in conjunction with the National Athletic Trainers’ Association (NATA). Focus has been placed on the tagline, “Health Care for Life and Sport,” which emphasizes the medical component of the athletic training profession as well as recognizes the variety of athletic training settings.
Athletic training is practiced by athletic trainers and health care professionals who collaborate with physicians to optimize activity and participation of patients and clients. Athletic training encompasses the prevention, diagnosis, and intervention of emergency, acute, and chronic medical conditions involving impairment, functional limitations and disabilities. The Athletic Training Department at Heidelberg houses both the Sports Medicine Program and the CAATE Accredited Athletic Training Education Program (ATEP). The ATEP program is designed to prepare students for various careers in the athletic training profession. The ATEP curriculum is based on the National Athletic Trainers Association (NATA) Education Competencies.
The program has two components: didactic and clinical. The didactic component includes traditional coursework and laboratory exercises. The clinical component requires practical experiences in a supervised environment at our affiliated sites. All students in the program are required to obtain at least 800 supervised contact hours in athletic training and allied health settings.
Athletic Training Preview Day is Friday, April 3rd. This is a great opportunity to learn first-hand about Heidelberg's AETP program. Register online for the event.
