Here's one time when a strikeout is good

The members of the softball team know all too well the devastating effects of cancer. Last year, they rallied around teammate Kate Allenspach as her mother, Linda Lou, lost her battle with cervical cancer.

During their home game on Sunday (rescheduled for April 26 against Oberlin) the team is sponsoring a StrikeOut Cancer event to raise funds for the American Cancer Society.

“This is a great opportunity … everyone’s been affected by cancer,” said senior team member Crystal Killoran. “And with Kate’s mom, she’s a really important part of the team.”

For the StrikeOut Cancer event, team members are seeking sponsorship for $25 each. Sponsorship costs $20 for each additional player. Throughout the game, StrikeOut Cancer T-shirts will be sold, and the first 100 in attendance will receive a free hotdog. Additionally, a raffle and 50/50 drawing will be held.

The StrikeOut Cancer initiative is a joint project between the National Fastpitch Coaches Association and the American Cancer Society. Collegiate softball teams across the nation are hosting these events to raise awareness and funds to fight cancer. Since starting the initiative year, the coaches association has raised thousands of dollars to support the fight.

Killoran said her teammates have been pleased by the support they’ve received from the community and the student body.

To participate in the StrikeOut Cancer game, come to Mayer Field when the Berg takes on Oberlin at 1:00, Sunday, April 26.

Head Coach Betsy Hada, who’s organizing the event, said the team will dedicate the game to Linda Lou Allenspach and Eric Phillips, a former coach who lost his battle with cancer in 2007.
