On 9/11 anniversary, prayers for peace, justice

A group of Heidelberg students, faculty and staff gathered at noon today to remember the events of 9/11 eight years ago and to pray for peace and justice.

Campus Minister Paul Sittason Stark, who conducted the ceremony, recalled that on Sept. 11, 2001, many prayers were spoken in many languages and in many faiths.

“As people witnessed the violence first hand and through television, voices came together in fear and in hope for survival,” he said. “In this day and age, with many different nations, languages, economies and religions, we long for peace and for justice.”

The group prayed together, many in silent reflection, on a sun-drenched day with cloudless blue skies, eerily reminiscent of the day of the attacks on the World Trade Center.

As the ceremony came to a close, Paul encouraged those gathered to “do our part to build a more compassionate, loving and just community.”
