Students experience Muslim traditions

As Muslims across the world celebrated the holy month of Ramadan, a group of 45 Heidelberg students recently visited the Islamic Institute of Knowledge in Dearborn, Mich., to enjoy a traditional Islamic Iftar and learn about the Muslim faith.

Sept. 15 was the 25th day of Ramadan – a day Muslims celebrate by fasting from sunrise to sunset. The visit to the institute marked the second year in a row a delegation from Heidelberg was welcomed with warm hospitality. The trip was organized by Allyson Stanton, president of the Cultural and Spiritual Club and was supervised by Dr. Samira Risheg, assistant professor of education, and Campus Minister Paul Stark.

Imam Abdul Latif Berry, director of the institute, welcomed the Heidelberg students, faculty and community members, and led a discussion that focused on the importance of religions in unity, rather than division. Imam Berry also explained the meaning of Islam and the importance of Ramadan in a Muslim’s life. The students had the opportunity to ask questions and share their views about Islam. Rev. Stark and Dr. John Bing, professor of political science, also shared their thoughts.

“It was a learning experience, as well as an enjoyable one, for everyone involved,” Dr. Risheg said.

In thanks for its hospitality, the institute was presented with gifts from Heidelberg.
