Supersized? No … Supercharged! Filmmaker coming to ‘Berg

If you’ve ever heard of “Super Size Me,” the junk food documentary, then get ready for a stunning look at the other side of the table. The award-winning documentary, “Supercharge Me! 30 Days Raw” is coming to campus on Tuesday at 7 p.m. in Rickly Chapel. The event is sponsored by Heidelberg and is free and open to the public.

Independent filmmaker Jenna Norwood will present her film, followed by a lecture and discussion.

According to information provided by Norwood, “Supercharge Me!” is a “rawcumentary” – a film showing what happens when one eats only raw, organic food for 30 days. The original inspiration was weight loss. Norwood wanted to fulfill a lifelong dream: to dress up as a Las Vegas showgirl for Halloween. But that dream met bulging reality in the mirror and she knew something had to be done.

Norwood’s odyssey took her from Sarasota, Fla., to San Diego, where she enrolled in a 30-day raw food detox program. Raw foodists consume mostly uncooked “living” foods. Generally, these foods include organic fruits, vegetables, nuts, seeds, sprouted grains and juices. Many believe that food in its raw state has greater nutritional value and contains more enzymes.

Documentary cameras followed Norwood as she transformed her life with a raw food diet and interviewed doctors, raw food experts, celebrities and a variety of others around the world who follow the raw food lifestyle. The results were dramatic and far beyond her expectations.

After her dramatic transformation, Norwood switched careers from public relations consultant to health educator and raw food chef. She opened Veggie Magic/Vibe Cuisine, an organic, raw food restaurant in Sarasota. Each month, she teaches raw food preparation classes at Whole Foods Market.

As a follow-up to the film, Norwood produces a free, weekly video show, which may be viewed on her website. The show features outtakes from the film, “Jenna’s Healthy Kitchen,” segments and footage from her adventures in the raw food world.

Norwood currently serves as chair of the Healthy Start Coalition of Sarasota. She is a native of Washington, D.C., where she founded her PR consulting business in 1993. She has a bachelor’s degree in journalism from the University of Maryland and received her nutrition and culinary education through the Optimum Health Institute and the Living Light Culinary Arts Institute.
