‘Berg Wins OAC Quarterfinal Match
Tiffin, Ohio – November 3, 2009 – In the Quarterfinals of the Ohio Athletic Conference Tournament, the no. 4 seed Heidelberg University men’s soccer team was victorious over no. 5 seed Marietta College with the score of 1-0. The win advances the Berg to the OAC Semifinals and marks its first OAC Tournament victory since 1999, when they beat John Carroll University 4-2 in double overtime in the first round.
Despite Heidelberg having an 8-2 shot advantage in the first half, the game would go into halftime with the score of 0-0.
The Berg answered in the 74th minute in the second half, when Grant Beck (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) connected with a cross to Jon Kijowski (Norwalk, Ohio / Norwalk), which then Kijowski placed a header in the far corner in the back of net for the eventual game-winning goal.
Overall Heidelberg outshot Marietta 17-7. This is the second straight game that Heidelberg has outshot its opponents by double digits.
Following Kijowski’s three shots with one goal performance was Grant Beck who had a game-high five shots with one shot on goal and earned an assist. Ryan Vowinkle (Southlake, Texas / Southlake Carroll) and Cory Buhrman (Brunswick, Ohio / Brunswick) each had two shots, while Buhrman had two shots on goal.
Heidelberg's Ryan Smith (Roanoke, Texas / Keller) contributed with solid play at goal keeper while accumulating three saves.
Heidelberg will continue their postseason action when they travel to no. 1 seed Ohio Northern University Thursday November 5, at 2 p.m.
