Hoernemann Stadium and Fox Den Alumni Center

It’s Game Day for Our New Stadium and Alumni Center!

“This project gets us in the ball game!”
– John Kratz, Board of Trustees

On November 7, 2009, Heidelberg played its first football game on campus since 1964, 45 years ago.

This very special homecoming was due to the installation of an artificial turf field in 2008, made possible by the support of Heidelberg alumni Cliff (’27) and Mary (’32) Saurwein. Heidelberg won the game, and has played all of its home games on this field ever since.

The new Hoernemann Stadium and The Fox Den Alumni Center will provide a permanent place for the entire campus community to gather and experience athletics and events together. A place where we can welcome new students into the Heidelberg experience, not just for the time they spend with us on campus, but for the rest of their lives. And a place where you who have gone on to do Heidelberg proud can return, remember and feel part of us again. Today, it’s Game Day for building a home for athletics and alumni at Heidelberg!

Construction on the facility began in late fall. The harsh winter impacted the progress. But along with the warmer temperatures and the arrival of spring, there is good news to report.

“The weather certainly has caused delays but that was not wholly unexpected,” said Rod Morrison, associate vice president for engineering and facilities and the on-campus construction site manager. Despite the delays, crews from general contractor The Snavely Group of Chagrin Falls were able to complete some preliminary work during the winter months.

The bottom line: The project completion date remains the same.

As of mid-March, work on the structure and foundation of the main building and bleachers is ongoing, Morrison said. Nearly all of the excavation work is completed. Footers have been poured for the building and crews have finished the installation of caissons that will support the bleacher structure.

Morrison anticipates the builders will be able to catch up on the several days’ delay quickly as the weather warms and the ground thaws. “The contractor is eager to get out and make good progress,” he said. “We are still on schedule for completion by the first home football game on Sept. 6.”
