CLASSIFICATIONS:
Voice*
Junior Division—Perform two contrasting solos (8 mins. max.) at the level of works from the Class A or B OMEA Adjudicated Events List; memorization required.
Senior Division—Perform two contrasting solos (10 mins. max.), one in English and one in a foreign language, at the level of works from the Class A OMEA Adjudicated Events List; memorization required.
Instrumental* (woodwind, brass, percussion)
Junior Division—Perform one or two solo(s) works (8 mins. max.) at the level of works from the Class A or B OMEA Adjudicated Events List.
Senior Division—Perform one or two solo(s) works (10 mins. max.) at the level of works from the Class A OMEA Adjudicated Events List.
Strings
Junior Division—Perform one or two solo(s) works (8 mins. max.) at the level of works from the Class A or B OMEA Adjudicated Events List.
Senior Division—Perform one or two solo(s) works (10 mins. max.) at the level of works from the Class A OMEA Adjudicated Events List.
Piano
Junior Division—One piece from the classical period and at least one other contrasting piece from the 19th or 20th century (10 mins. max.); memorization required.
Senior Division—Perform first movement of sonata by Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven and at least one other contrasting piece from a different style period (15 mins. max.); memorization required.
*Accompanist: Vocal/Instrumental soloists must provide their own accompanist.

First Place—$150
Second Place—$100
Third Place—$75
Senior Division
First Place—$250 and $20,000 Heidelberg Scholarship
Second Place—$200 and $16,000 Heidelberg Scholarship
Third Place—$150 and $12,000 Heidelberg Scholarship
*Heidelberg reserves the right not to declare a winner. Scholarship awarded upon admission and is contingent upon 3.0 GPA and 22 ACT/1050 SAT.
COMPETITION RULES (please read carefully)
Eligibility
Students in the Junior Division must be in grade 9 or 10. Students in the Senior Division must be in grade 11 or 12. Students may be a prize winner in one performance classification only. Previous first place winners of the Performance Pacesetter Senior Division are not eligible to win again. Children of Heidelberg faculty are not eligible.
Memorization
Pianists and vocalists must perform from memory. In other classifications, memorization is at the discretion of the performer.
Accompanists
Vocalists and instrumentalists must be accompanied by piano and must provide their own accompanist.
Copies of Scores
Contestants must provide one original copy of each composition for the use of the judges. Please mark measure numbers in judge’s scores. A photocopied score will disqualify the contestant from the competition.
Judging Procedures
Decision of the judges is final. The judges reserve the right to hear all or part of the prepared solos and the right not to choose a winner. Performance time is limited as stated in the guidelines. No videotaping, photographing or recording permitted.
Scheduling Information
Competition schedule will be mailed by February 9, 2009. The Department of Music reserves the right to cancel a division if there are an insufficient number of performers. The Department also reserves the right to place a cap on the number of performers in a given division.
Application Information
A $35 application fee (non-refundable) is required. Please make checks payable to Heidelberg University. You will receive confirmation of your application upon receipt.
Auditions for Heidelberg Music
Students who are interested in applying for admission to the Department of Music at Heidelberg may use their Pacesetter performance as their audition. The audition process also includes an interview with appropriate faculty members and a musicianship test. The interview session will take place in the afternoon, following the conclusion of the Pacesetter Competition. Separate application forms are required for auditioning purposes.
