Preparations

  • Only first-time freshmen students entering Heidelberg College are eligible to participate and receive scholarship awards through the Scholars Day program.  Scholarship awards are for the first year and are renewable throughout the student’s undergraduate program of study at Heidelberg, subject to scholarship renewal requirements.
  • To ensure that each student receives the personal attention they deserve at this event, space is limited.  Please register as soon as possible to guarantee your participation in your preferred day.
  • Please allow enough time to park and register.  Upon registration you will receive a detailed schedule and packet of information that will highlight the day and information sessions available.  The program begins promptly at 8:45am.
  • Dress is business attire.  Jeans are discouraged, but please dress in a manner that is comfortable to you.
  • Your participation in the day will include a personal interview and a writing sample, each approximately 30 minutes long.  A portfolio, described in the evaluation process, is required in advance.
  • There will be times during the day when you will not be specifically engaged in the evaluation process.  Seminar and information sessions will be available for you to attend.  These sessions are encouraged and will help you better familiarize yourself with Heidelberg College and its offerings.
  • The President’s Lunch is a special time that recognizes all participants for their accomplishments.
  • Following Scholars Day, a scoring process will be completed with notification to participants sent generally within two to three weeks of the day of the February 2 program.
  • If you are planning on staying overnight in the Tiffin area, a list of area accommodations is available for your convenience.

Evaluation Process

Scholarships will be awarded based on three criteria:

Portfolio Review: Portfolios should show us about you! Use your creativity to showcase some of your work, honors, awards, a profile of activities, community service involvement, sample of hobbies and any other materials that highlight the unique aspects of your personal and academic background. Your portfolio will be used as part of your interview. Feel free to bring additional information or items the day of the event that you feel will help showcase your qualifications. Please send a hardcopy of your portfolio to the Office of Admission, 310 E Market St., Tiffin OH 44883, one week prior to the day of the event.

    • January 31: Portfolios due by January 19
    • February 7: Portfolios due by January 31
(Portfolios will be returned at the completion of your interview.)

Personal interview: A chance for select faculty, staff and/or administrators to get to know you and ask you questions about your personal and academic background.  Interviews will last approximately 30 minutes and you will be assigned an interview time upon your arrival the day of the event.

Writing Sample: You will be asked to write a short essay on a topic that you will be assigned at the start of the session.  You will be in a computer lab and have approximately 30 minutes to complete the sample.
