What is a Cover Letter?

A cover letter is an introduction to your resume. It may be the first piece of correspondence an employer reads from you, and it is sometimes used as a writing sample. It can also provide the employer a window into your personality. Therefore, it is a very important document.

Your Cover Letter should answer the following questions:

  1. What position are you applying for?
  2. Why are you interested in the position?
  3. What skills or attributes do you bring to the position and organization?
  4. What specific skills / knowledge / achievements make you a good match for the position?
  5. Why do you want to work for this organization?

Simple Cover Letter Formula:

First Paragraph
  • State your purpose – why are you writing?
  • Name the position you are seeking
  • Mention source of lead, referral, location of advertisement
  • Capture attention
 
Middle Paragraphs
  • Highlight related experience, education and activities
  • Emphasize accomplishments and relevant skills using specific examples
  • Present a direct match between qualifications and the job description requirements
 
Closing Paragraph
  • Use a strong and confident close
  • Restate the solid match (your credentials = the position)
  • Refer to your enclosed resume
  • Request application materials
  • State your follow-up plans    
  • Ask for the interview
