Welcome
Imagine spending a week of your high school summer on a beautiful college campus, learning what
it takes to be a game developer, forensic scientist, toy designer or novelist. Picture yourself learning
about the real science behind C.S.I., performing at a poetry slam, or ordering a pizza with your suitemates
and watching a great movie.
SummerBerg is a unique and exciting summer experience at Heidelberg College. Our residential,
academic program is open to boys and girls entering grades 8-12. Our students live and learn together
– taking exciting classes, making friends and experiencing college life.
Our courses give students a head start on their upcoming high school classes and on their future
lives as college students. By offering courses not traditionally offered in high schools, SummerBerg
helps students identify academic fields or college programs that interest them. It also provides a rich
experience to describe for college essays and demonstrates dedication to academics.
Courses are designed to be challenging, but also clear and accessible. Instead of listening to dull
lectures, students engage in hands-on classroom projects, fun activities and personal coaching. Students
choose one course for the week, and students may attend multiple weeks and try different courses. In
our Industrial Design and Computer Science workshops, we offer a different project each week.
We balance coursework with free time activities and field trips. A typical afternoon may find
students playing basketball, joining a craft activity, or walking into town to a bookstore or cafe. All students
also head off-campus for an educational adventure pertaining to their coursework.
Our team of talented teachers and resident advisors are trained to serve students as educators,
mentors and friends. SummerBerg’s staff members oversee students on a 24-hour basis and ensure that
everyone feels safe and welcome.
