Military Family
Growing up in a military family has taken me all over the United States and across the globe. I’ve lived in Irvine, California; Leavenworth, Kansas; New Bern, North Carolina; Alexandria, Virginia; Corpus Christi, Texas; Okinawa, Japan, and now Tiffin. I have attended nine different schools. The longest I have ever lived in one location was for four years (Virginia). I lived in Japan when I was in first and second grade as well as during my junior and senior years of high school. My parents remained in Japan, along with my younger sister, for my freshman year here at Heidelberg and just recently moved back to the states this summer. My mom and dad now live in Carlisle, Pennsylvania, and my sister is off at college as well.
Being in a military family is tough, there’s no doubt about that. When a parent joins the military the whole family truly enlists with them. My dad joined the Marine Corps before I was born so the military lifestyle is all I’ve ever known, but I wouldn’t have wanted to grow up any other way. Living in all these places, being exposed to different walks of life, and being able to travel because of it, has allowed me to experience so many cultures that I wouldn’t have been able to without my dad’s role in the military.
Why Heidelberg?
Heidelberg was first put on my radar by my parents who both graduated from Heidelberg in ‘87 and ‘88. They always talked about their times in college and what a great experience Heidelberg was for them. With all my travels and exposure that my dad’s role in the Marine Corps has given me, I originally wasn’t too sure if attending a university in Tiffin, the smallest town I would have ever lived in, would be the right choice for me. However, the warmth and welcoming personalities of my Admission Counselor Polly Cooper, President Huntington, all the faculty, alumni, and students who continued to contact me after my acceptance to talk to me about Heidelberg really made what I thought would be a difficult decision fairly easy.
Unique Traditions
One of my favorite parts about Heidelberg is that it has so many unique traditions. With events like T-Bridge, the bells ringing out our Alma Mater, receiving your Heidelberg pin at Convocation, Homecoming, lining the streets with Heidelberg flags, Late Night Breakfast, parading down Greenfield on graduation day, and the singing of the Alma Mater at almost every event on campus, Heidelberg’s love of its traditions really makes the entire campus feel like they are part of something greater than themselves.
Working Ahead
One of the great things about Heidelberg is that students can double major, especially in fields with no overlap such as my majors, political science and biology with a pre-med concentration. Students looking to double major really have to focus on organization. Graduating in four years with two sets of specific requirements can be significantly more difficult than having a single major but if a student is passionate about both subject areas, as I am, the extra effort is worth every additional homework assignment and scheduling conflict. Something that really helped me coming into college as a double major were my credits I had already completed during my high school years.
Dr. Krebs?
After I graduate my goal is to attend medical school and to become a doctor. My ultimate dream job would to be a doctor working with Doctors Without Borders. I feel that I have a calling to help those in need and that doing so would be the best and most rewarding use of my abilities.
