Biochemistry and Biology Major
I chose Heidelberg because of the Chemistry Department’s high academic standards, and to play collegiate soccer.
I majored in Biochemistry and Biology to give myself the best all-around knowledge to either enter the workforce, go to graduate school, or medical school.
A major challenge I encountered while at Heidelberg was time management after I stopped playing soccer. I handled it by making a calendar and also working on classwork with my friends.
Above all, Heidelberg prepared me to apply and get into 5 chemistry Ph.D. programs. Also, mature and grow as a person.
Outside of the classroom, I was involved in Chemistry Club, Rho Eta Delta, Tri-Beta, and Men’s Soccer.
My favorite extra-curricular activity was playing soccer because it keeps me active and helps me take my mind off stressors.
One faculty or staff mentor or advisor who impacted my ‘Berg experience is Dr. Nate Beres because he suggested to look at graduate school programs and apply for internships. The experience at my internship changed my outlook on my future and led me to apply to graduate schools.
My advice to new freshman me would be to understand that your experience is in your own hands. The amount of work you put into making friends and doing well in classes is up to you.
My favorite Heidelberg memory is going to San Diego with the Chemistry Club for the ACS conference.
My plans after graduation are to attend the University of Tennessee for a Ph.D. in chemistry.
