Erin Gorrell, ’15, wasn’t about to let a pandemic get in the way of finishing her Ph.D. at Kent State University. She had worked too hard to let that happen. With a little creativity and adaptability, she successfully completed complex research and defended her dissertation virtually in October. Now Dr. Gorrell, she was pleased that some great Heidelberg mentors celebrated with her.
We recently connected with Erin and asked about her graduate school experience, her Heidelberg foundation and her new job.

Four students are spending their spring break in Belize, Central America, together with professors Dr. Amy Berger and Dr. Michele Castleman. This week-long trip is the primary component for their class “Caribbean Biogeography”. While there, they explore reef, shore, and jungle environments. This year's Ethics Bowl Team, sponsored by the School of Business & Technology (BAE219), sent seven undergraduates of various majors to the regional competition at Oakland University last weekend. The Heidelberg team fared well, ranking third out of 11 regional schools. This third-place rank earns the ’Berg team an alternate spot at national competition in Atlanta in February.
Competing for Heidelberg were: Zak Hahn, Penelope Christian, Emma Baughman, Katie Bauman, Rebekah Marstaller, Em Swain and Reece Schmidt.

Seven students from Dr. Barry Devine’s spring semester literature course, “Studies in the Irish Novel,” had an opportunity typically afforded to faculty and grad students when they participated in the Midwest Regional American Conference for Irish Studies Oct. 10-12.

Jessica Burge had an opportunity to cross something off her bucket list when she decided to study abroad in Australia. Halfway through the semester, she realizes she’s living her dream, even if it has pushed her outside of her comfort zone.
