When Marching Band Director Jon Waters approached junior Paul Reese last year to help organize logistics for the band and develop student leadership, Reese responded with his usual “Put me in, Coach. I’m ready to play” enthusiasm.
“Last year, we developed some student leadership positions to test the waters, and Paul and a few others emerged,” Waters said.

The Singing Collegians show choir was formed on a strong foundation over half a century ago. But the name and the concept had become a bit outdated. This summer was the perfect time for the ensemble to do a reboot, to become a little sharper, a little edgier.
“The name Singing Collegians wasn’t resonating as a contemporary show choir among today’s students,” said Dr. Carol Dusdieker, director of the School of Music & Theatre and associate professor of voice.

There’s a favorite family photo of Madeline Flores as a toddler, sitting in her high chair – not at the dinner table but at the piano. That may have been an early indication of things to come for this sophomore organ performance major who comes from a musical family.
This summer, Madeline completed an internship as the assistant music director at St. Mary’s Catholic Church in Bluffton, Ohio, not far from her hometown of Columbus Grove.

As the saying goes, resistance is futile. Or is it?
In the world of instrumental conducting, resistance is imperative in teaching would-be conductors the proper billowy physical motions of the baton. The feeling is similar to buoyancy or weightlessness.
It’s a difficult concept to demonstrate, so Professor Jon Waters took an unconventional approach. For two class sessions recently, the pool at the Tiffin Community YMCA became a classroom for Jon and his seven students, who learned that water naturalizes the motion of conducting.
