The viewing deck atop Gillmor Hall might be a bit crowded on Monday. As we know, a large swath of the U.S. will experience a total solar eclipse. Physics professor Dr. Steven Velasquez plans to take in the phenomenon on the roof with special solar binoculars and a telescope.
“For many students in the area, it’ll be a first,” he said. “With eclipses, there’s actually a lot of science going on that people don’t realize. It’s pretty cool.”

The new academic year will bring some exciting changes in academic leadership for several senior faculty members along with the restructuring of academic divisions into schools.
The changes represent the first big phase of ASIIP – the Academic Strategic Initiatives for Improvement Plan, according to Provost Dr. Beth Schwartz. The entire faculty was involved with major research, planning and development of recommendations for ASIIP over the past 18 months.

The Heidelberg Sustainability Committee has secured its largest grant yet to equip all residence hall rooms and academic offices with small recycling containers.
With $8,750 from the Ottawa-Sandusky-Seneca Solid Waste District – Heidelberg’s recycling partner for more than 10 years – the university will purchase 1,000 recycling containers, according Sustainability Committee member Mark Zeno. Inter-Hall Residence Council will provide the required 20 percent in matching funds, $2,180.

“Oh my gosh, what day is it?” It’s Thursday, August 3 as Scott Carpenter, ’17, found out. “It’s only been two days. I’ve done so much,” he laughed. Life comes at you fast when you’re pursuing your dream.
Two days prior, Carpenter accepted the position of TV sports anchor at WLTZ in Columbus, Georgia. Scott will be seen Monday through Saturday nights on the NBC affiliate at 6, 10 and 11 p.m. doing what he loves most: talking sports.
