Nothing about the 2020 Back the Berg Golf Outing was easy. Twice postponed because of COVID-19 precautions, the event was pushed to last Sunday. The 120 golfers at the event were forced to battle wind, rain, and chilly temperatures -- turning Back the Berg into Back the Brrrrrg. Those who stuck it out, however, were rewarded with sunny skies for their final few holes.

Every year, calls from a variety of professional organizations come out, seeking up and coming leaders in the profession to serve in roles as “emerging leaders.” The process is competitive, and yields a close mentorship relationship, networking experiences, state and national leadership opportunities, and rich experiences.

Tri Beta, the National Biology Honorary Society at Heidelberg, has organized a COVID-Friendly Professional Development Series which will take place throughout the 2020 Fall and 2021 Spring semesters this academic year. The goal of this series is to help students in the sciences boost their resumes, gain insight into the lives of alumni working in the field or continuing their education, and better prepare themselves for life after graduation. These events are being co-sponsored by SCRUBS, the pre-professional organization on campus, and the Heidelberg Chemistry Club.

One man’s trash, as they say, is another man’s treasure. Just ask CNIT Helpdesk Technician Tori Smith, who set out to secure laptops for ‘Berg students who may need them while learning remotely during the COVID pandemic.
Tori reached out through her social media, asking for donations of used laptops that she could refurbish and provide to students who needed them. She received a few donations, but not enough to support the HU student need.

Fredi Lajvardi, a retired teacher from Carl Hayden High School in Phoenix, used his passion for technology to change the lives of inner-city students. He gave these teenagers something to look forward to, to be proud of, to learn creativity, to learn problem solving skills, to build teamwork, and to help them find their own passions and futures.
Lajvardi was the keynote speaker for the HYPE Career Ready® program Wednesday, speaking to Heidelberg students virtually about the possibilities in STEM fields.
