’20 education majors reflect on first year in their classrooms

Happy National Teacher Appreciation Day! On a day singled out to honor teachers and recognize the enduring contributions they make in our lives, we asked Class of 2020 education majors to reflect on their first year in the classroom as they launch into their careers to help mold and guide children in positive directions. As you might imagine, the pandemic threw them a curveball, but they walked through those challenges armed with a strong foundation gained at Heidelberg.

April is National Donate Life Month, a time for all Americans to celebrate the generosity of those who have saved lives by becoming organ, eye and tissue donors. That hits home for young alumna Hannah Griffith, ’18, and her family.

When Hannah was a sophomore at Heidelberg, her dad received a new heart. Lifeline of Ohio was the organization that helped to facilitate the transplant. She could not have known at the time that she would find a permanent professional home with the organization.

CrossFit gym owner and athletic trainer Jared Ruffing, ’10, has knocked it out of the park, turning his passion for fitness into a successful local business alongside his brother, Justin.

Jared graduated from Heidelberg with a bachelor’s degree in Athletic Training and Sport Management, focusing on Fitness. Years before coming to Heidelberg, even as far back as junior high, he was interested in athletic performance enhancement.

Tyler Hunter, ’18, has always known he wanted a career to help and care for others. That’s why he chose nursing. And thanks to an exceptional undergrad experience at Heidelberg, with professors and coaches who pushed him and demanded excellence, he’s well on his way.

For the past six months, Tyler has worked as a Critical Care nurse in the Neurointensive Care Unit at Miami Valley Hospital. It’s challenging, it’s stressful, but he loves it.

Caleb Frye’s first year of graduate school has been full of twists and turns, especially in the research world of COVID-19. 

Following graduation from Heidelberg last May, Caleb selected Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, where he’s pursuing his Ph.D. in chemistry with a research focus in biochemistry. His timing was perfect; he hopes to develop his research specialization in the biochemistry of infectious diseases.
