Last spring, when COVID-19 forced the closing of campuses across the country, faculty were forced into emergency remote teaching. In the face of ongoing uncertainty and the Heidelberg’s strong desire to fully reopen for in-person classes this fall, there was lots of extra learning going on this summer, and it wasn’t by students.

Heidelberg’s Archives is like a window to the past, where the institution’s history and memorabilia live. For the past 14 years, Professor Emeritus of German Dr. Bob Berg and his wife, Dorothy, have been the keepers of the Archives.
During their time as archivists, these Class of ’65 alumni made a great deal of progress in both organizing the holdings and bringing preservation processes up to date.
But, it’s time for a new chapter. Bob and Dorothy have officially retired as archivists – in Bob’s case, retired again.

On May 18, Dr. Beth Schwartz will conclude five productive years as Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost. She departs Heidelberg to become Provost and Professor of Psychology at Endicott College in Massachusetts.
“While I am excited about joining the Endicott community and heading ‘home’ to be near family, it is never easy to leave colleagues with whom I will genuinely miss working,” Beth said.

Dean and Professor of Chemistry Bryan Smith loves Heidelberg. Growing up in Tiffin, he enrolled as a first-generation college student in the late 1980s, excelling in the classroom and as a member of the Student Prince football team for a year.
Bryan is taking on a new leadership role at his beloved alma mater. President Rob Huntington announced on Tuesday that Bryan, who is currently also serving as the Dean of Allied Health, Behavioral and Natural Science, has been appointed Interim Vice President for Academic Affairs and Provost.

The Heidelberg community extends big congratulations to three faculty members, who were honored for their excellence in teaching, commitment to the humanities and distinguished service.
The annual faculty awards were presented last Friday (Feb. 21) at a dinner with their colleagues and members of the Board of Trustees, who were on campus for their winter meetings last weekend.
