First-year and second-year students got their academic year rolling even before classes started this week.
Sunday morning, new students boarded buses and headed to Hocking Hills for two days of bonding and fun outdoor activities to launch their HYPE Career Ready journey.
In its second year, the HYPE First-Year Common Experience produced 300-plus “happy campers.”

“Oh my gosh, what day is it?” It’s Thursday, August 3 as Scott Carpenter, ’17, found out. “It’s only been two days. I’ve done so much,” he laughed. Life comes at you fast when you’re pursuing your dream.
Two days prior, Carpenter accepted the position of TV sports anchor at WLTZ in Columbus, Georgia. Scott will be seen Monday through Saturday nights on the NBC affiliate at 6, 10 and 11 p.m. doing what he loves most: talking sports.

New experiences with different cultures have the potential to change a person’s perspective. Just ask Josh Hilgenberg and Payge Smith.
Josh and Payge, both seniors this fall, were among a group of 17 ‘Berg students who traveled to the Texas-Mexico border June 17-24 for a weeklong service trip in a Mexican immigrant community. Service Learning on the U.S./Mexico Border allowed students to immerse themselves in a different culture.

For the third year, Heidelberg served as the host school for the Model United Nations of the Far West Conference in San Francisco. This year’s late April gathering brought together about 500 students in a simulation to address world issues with the theme was “Old Threats, New Threats: Global and Human Security in 2017.”
Seniors Bethany Beaver and Colin Higgins fulfilled the key roles of General Secretary and Under-Secretary General, overseeing the entire conference and assuring its smooth administration.

Four students traveled last week to Bristol, Connecticut to take in the full ESPN experience.
Randy Buffington, Scott Carpenter, Geoff Helms and Mallory Paul are all WHEI-TV 10 anchors. The group at WHEI-TV 10 produces “Live at 5,” a weekly newscast Tuesdays at 5 p.m.
All four students along with Robyn White, media producer and coordinator, made the trip to the ESPN studios to job shadow ‘Berg alum and SportsCenter host John Buccigross, ‘88.
