She’s a science nerd and she embraces it.

Most of Ashlie (Burkhart) Gowitzka’s family works in the medical or education fields, so when she became a biology teacher, she saw it as a “best of both worlds” decision – although there never really was any doubt she’d be a teacher.

“I wanted to be a teacher from the age of 6, and some great science educators that I had at Margaretta Local Schools influenced me in selecting science education pretty early on,” she says.

More than 20 successful science alumni representing six decades returned to campus to present their research and share their experiences during the 2019 Science Celebration last weekend. 

Highlighting the two-day celebration was a keynote address from Dr. Mark Peeples, ’74, a professor in the Department of Pediatrics at The Ohio State University and the principal investigator at the Center for Vaccine & Immunity at the Wexner Research Institute at Nationwide Children’s Hospital.

A chance meeting – in where else but Heidelberg’s health center – got the ball rolling for Heidelberg’s first-ever nursing student.

Kaitlin Kingman, a junior, recalls visiting the health center last fall with a horrible case of bronchitis. Dr. Karen Estridge, a registered nurse and healthcare administrator who came on board to develop and implement the new Bachelor of Science in Nursing program, happened to be lending a hand in the center that day, and was taking care of Kaitlin.
