MAC project provides mental health resources to veterinarians

Veterinarians face unique job challenges. Their patients can’t speak or tell them what’s wrong. They often have to euthanize a patient with a treatable injury or illness because its caretaker can’t afford the remedy. Over time, these and other stressors weigh heavily on vets.

Job challenges among the more than 70,000 veterinarians have led to disproportionately high suicide rates, according to the U.S. Centers of Control and Prevention. Nearly 400 veterinarians died by suicide between 1979 and 2015, the CDC said.

Roxana Saberi, foreign correspondent for CBS News, has an immense amount of knowledge on dealing with conflict in a work environment, as well as how to transition into life after college. She shared her experiences and wisdom with Heidelberg students as the final HYPE Career Ready speaker this academic year.

Saberi has traveled the world, covering a wide range of topics from protests to plastic pollution. Many of her assignments were in the Middle East. There are many risks when reporting some events, one specific trip suddenly became frightening due to a false accusation.

Dear Classmates and Friends of Curtis Helman,

Our campus will gather to share our loss and to remember Curtis Helman this evening at 9:00 pm. We will gather at Adams Academic All-American Plaza in front of Hoernemann Stadium for a candlelight vigil. Every death is difficult. The loss of a fellow resident, classmate, and teammate is especially difficult.

Dear Heidelberg Community,

We are writing to share some very tragic news with all of you.  Early this morning, the Heidelberg community lost one of its own when sophomore student-athlete Curtis Helman was killed in an ATV accident in neighboring Wood County.  Our campus is devastated at this news.  We ask that all of us keep Curtis's family, parents Greag and Diane and sisters Brooke and Brianna, as well as his football family and his 'Berg friends in our thoughts and prayers.

Tyler Hunter, ’18, has always known he wanted a career to help and care for others. That’s why he chose nursing. And thanks to an exceptional undergrad experience at Heidelberg, with professors and coaches who pushed him and demanded excellence, he’s well on his way.

For the past six months, Tyler has worked as a Critical Care nurse in the Neurointensive Care Unit at Miami Valley Hospital. It’s challenging, it’s stressful, but he loves it.
