Computer Science Major Requirements

The Computer Science major offers a unique blend of computer science theory and information technology practice. Students in this major learn to model, design, and construct software; to solve problems using established techniques in database implementation and networking; and to develop effective methods for solving problems using computer-based solutions. Computer Science graduates have a comprehensive foundation that permits them to adapt to new technologies and new ideas.

Major in Computer Science

Required:

•  CPS 150: Fundamentals of Computer Science
•  CPS 201: Computer Programming I
•  CPS 202: Computer Programming II
•  CPS 220: Discrete Computational Structures
•  CPS 301: Computer Organization
•  CPS 311: Data Structures
•  CPS 312: Programming Languages
•  CPS 345: Computer and Network Security
•  CPS 490: Senior Capstone Experience
•  PHI 202: Logic OR PHI 380: Symbolic Logic
•  MTH 119: Statistics I and one additional math course

Select 1 from:

•  WRI 351: Business and Professional Writing
•  WRI 354: Writing to Inform
•  WRI 356: Writing for Non-Specialist Audiences

CONCENTRATIONS

All computer science majors must complete one of the following concentrations in addition to the above courses.

Computing Systems Concentration

•  Additional 9 hours in computer science or information systems courses at teh 290-level or higher. 

Cybersecurity Concentration

•  IST 320: Issues in Information Systems Security
•  IST 340: System and Network Administration
•  POL: 313: National Security Investigations or POL 389: Intelligence Operations
•  3 additional hours in computer science or information systems courses at teh 290-level or higher

Minor in Computer Science

Required:

•  CPS 150: Fundamentals of Computer Science
•  CPS 201: Computer Programming I
•  3 more computer science courses at the 290-level or above
