Mathematics Major Requirements

The Department of Mathematics and Physics seeks to contribute to the educational mission of Heidelberg University by providing: 1. instruction in mathematics as a major/minor area of study; 2. service courses for other departments in which mathematics is considered a vital tool; 3. the necessary mathematics preparation for prospective elementary and secondary school teachers.

Major in Mathematics

Required:

•  MTH 222: Calculus I
•  MTH 223: Calculus II
•  MTH 307: Calculus III
•  MTH 308: Calculus IV
•  MTH 390: Mathematical Communication Skills
•  MTH 490: Senior Capstone Experience
•  PHY 101: General Physics
•  CPS 150: Fundamentals of Computer Science
•  Any 200 level or above CPS course
•  One additional course selected from BIO, CHM, CPS, PHI, or PHY

Select 1 from:

•  MTH 401: Abstract Algebra
•  MTH 402: Topology
•  MTH 403: Complex Analysis
•  MTH 404: Real Analysis

Minor in Mathematics

Required:

•  MTH 222: Calculus I
•  MTH 223: Calculus II

Select 3 from:

•  MTH 302: Ordinary Differential Equations
•  MTH 303: Linear Algebra
•  MTH 305: College Geometry I
•  MTH 306: College Geometry II
•  MTH 307: Calculus III
•  MTH 308: Calculus IV
•  MTH 310: Introduction to Numerical Analysis
•  MTH 312: Introduction to Mathematical Statistics
•  MTH 321, 322: Independent Study
•  MTH 390: Mathematical Communication Skills
•  MTH 401: Abstract Algebra
•  MTH 402: Topology
•  MTH 403: Complex Analysis
•  MTH 404: Real Analysis
