Get prepared for an active career as a creative artist, writing music for classical and commercial performing media. This major combines training in acoustic and electronic compositional techniques with the study of music theory and provides you with regular opportunities to refine compositions in ensemble rehearsals and showcase finished pieces in recitals.
You’ll have access to two labs with computer and electronic music equipment and benefit from the expertise of faculty members who are accomplished composers. Every year provides networking opportunities with award-winning composers and performers at the annual New Music Festival held on campus.
Many of our alumni have continued onto graduate school and enjoy successful careers as university-level music theory and composition instructors. For many composers, teaching allows for financial security coupled with the freedom to pursue commissions and other compositional projects.
