Orientation is often a parent's first experience with letting go. It comes even before that long-anticipated move-in day, when you plan for emotions to run high. By attending Orientation, parents and guests gain a much better understanding of processes, expectations, timelines, opportunities, and nuances related to the life at Heidelberg. Parents, spouses, family members, friends, and others continue to play a role of the utmost importance in their college student's development and education. Orientation helps a student's support system create realistic expectations and offers a great deal of information for the transition to Heidelberg University.

How can I communicate with my student during Orientation?
Students have an extremely busy orientation schedule. We recommend that families and guests communicate with their students during joint sessions. The most common way to communicate at Orientation is via cell phone or text, but students will be asked to refrain from using devices while Orientation sessions are in progress.
Will we have any joint programs with the students?
There is a bit of program overlap for certain sessions throughout Orientation. Family members and guests are encouraged to sit with their student should they both desire. We ask, however, that family members and guests do not accompany their students when the two programs split.
Where may we park during New Student Orientation?
Heidelberg University has ample parking for students, parents, and families. Please park in Campus Center Lower Lot (Parking Lot F). You will not need a parking pass as Security will not be issuing tickets on New Student Orientation days.
May we eat in the dining hall during the program?
Your registration includes meal tickets for all meals and refreshments during Orientation. Meals will be served in Hoernemann Refectory, our campus dining hall. There will also be coffee breaks with light refreshments mid-way through Orientation. Berg Bistro 1850 will be open throughout Orientation should you need additional refreshments.
How many families attend Parent & Family Orientation?
About 60% of first-year students have family members or guests that attend Orientation. While it is not a requirement that students have accompanying parents or guests, we do strongly encourage parents and guests to attend Orientation.
