The Heidelberg story can't be told without telling the stories of our alumni. Over Heidelberg's history, our alumni have gone on to do great things. They truly live out our educational philosophy of developing individuals with high moral and ethical standards who are productive in their life's work, engaged in their communities, and responsible citizens of the world.

Paul Brown, ’69, remembers very distinctly his freshman year, sitting in the library, and listening to someone singing as they walked down the sidewalk. That “someone” was Ira Turpin, a musical prodigy from Canton, Ohio. Ira, then a sophomore in the class of ’68, had been in singing groups back home.

For years, Heidelberg University alumnus Colonel Chad Breeden, USMC has wanted to get engaged with his alma mater, but his military career and distance precluded his involvement. Back in 2013, he “took the plunge” when he returned to campus for his 25th reunion.

During his days as a standout student-athlete, Adam Smith, ’94, spent a lot of time on the Seiberling Gymnasium court and at Frost Kalnow Stadium, where the Student Princes played home football games until Hoernemann Stadium opened in 2012. In 2006, he was inducted into the ‘Berg Athletic Hall of Fame.

As a student, Annette (Meek) Slater, ’87, was involved in every performance ensemble the music department had to offer. “I just loved the experience, the closeness we got with our professors and the other students,” said Annette, who’s been teaching music and directing ensembles for 31 years, currently at Northwood in suburban Toledo. Now, Annette has stepped forward to direct a different kind of ensemble – northwest Ohio alumni. She figures when you hold something dear and you have a chance to pass it on, you jump on it.
