The band culture at Heidelberg received a big boost when renowned band director Jonathan Waters came on board in the summer of 2016. His express task was to revive a long-standing Marching Band tradition and elevate instrumental music as a means of giving students an excellent educational experience, positively impacting recruitment and retention and boosting community outreach. Just one year later, Jon and the Marching Band have made great strides on a shoestring budget.
A $500,000 Strike Up the Bands campaign was launched in the spring of 2017 to fully fund the Marching and Symphonic Bands. This campaign is divided into two parts -- $250,000 for operations such as the purchase of uniforms and instruments, halftime shows and travel, and $250,000 for an endowment fund to sustain the bands into the future. A Strike Up the Bands campaign committee, comprised of alumni and friends, have led the way with major gifts.
Why this campaign matters
“If we want these ensembles to be the best they can be -- alumni want that and students want that -- then we need to invest in them. We need to provide the tools for Jon Waters, because he can really bring it.”
