The Director of Theatre/Assistant Professor of Theatre is a dynamic teacher with a strong background in Acting, Directing and Theatre History. The Director of Theatre will serve as a curricular and programmatic leader for the theatre department, guiding assessment and artistic programming. The position teaches a 3-3 course load and directs one production per semester. Additional instructional and directing opportunities are possible with approval from the Director of the School of Music and Theatre and AVPAA.

This position reports to the Director of the School of Music and Theatre.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED:
The Director of Theatre/Assistant Professor of Theatre will collaborate with the Director of the School of Music and Theatre on curricular, assessment and staffing concerns. This position will assist with recruiting production and design candidates to support theatre productions. All personnel evaluations and hires are completed by the Director of the School of Music and Theatre in collaboration with the Human Resources Office.
This position is responsible for hiring and managing all theatre work study positions with assistance from the School of Music and Theatre Administrative Assistant. This position will work with the Technical Director to manage work study and laboratory students.
- Teach a Three-semester Acting sequence
- Teach a Two-semester Theatre History sequence
- Teaching Courses in Directing, Acting for the Camera, Introduction to Theatre and other courses according to departmental need and the candidate’s experience and strengths.
- Other teaching assignments may include Special Topics in Theatre, such as Theatre for Young Audiences, Playwriting, New Works Festival and other topics dependent on departmental need and the candidate’s experience and strengths.
- Recruit majors and non-major participants for all SMT programs and degrees.
- Coordinate with SMT faculty on assessment, curricular development, and artistic programming.
- Participation in the University’s Integrated Studies program
- Provide academic advising for theatre majors and minors. Fostering internships and leadership opportunities on- and off-campus.

- PhD in Theatre or MFA in Acting, Directing or Performance Studies
- Previous college teaching experience with the ability to assess and refine an undergraduate curriculum.
- Previous experience in theatre programming/administration with skills in program planning, fiscal budgeting, fundraising, audience development and professional outreach.
- Previous experience in collegiate or professional theatre directing across a broad range of theatrical eras and styles. Previous experience hiring and managing a production team, including guest designs and student workers.
- The ability to lead and develop a collegiate theatre program, and excellent classroom teaching skills are crucial.
- Recruiting ability is a primary requirement. Proven success in building a theatre program at the collegiate level is required.
- The ability to collaborate with students, faculty and programs within the School of Music and Theatre. Support and Service to School of Music and Theatre and to broad University constituencies is expected.
- The ability to act as a representative for the School of Music and Theatre and Heidelberg University. Outstanding oral communication skills.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks, collaborating with colleagues and student workers.
- Ability to travel and work weekends as needed according to SMT programming and recruitment endeavors.
TOOLS AND EQUIPMENT USED:
Various instructional technology including, but not limited to Google Suite, learning management systems such as Canvas, video conferencing, etc. Fluency on Production programs, such as Qlab, is required.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee frequently works in a classroom setting, as well as Gundlach Theatre. The noise level in the work environment will range from moderately quiet to occasionally loud. The lighting level in the work environment will range from black to strobe lights.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally be subject to a variety of outdoor conditions including heat, cold, and precipitation. The employee is required to be mobile and be able to communicate clearly and effectively with others. Theatre production is a primary responsibility of this candidate. The ability to assist with set construction, staging and other physical aspects is crucial.
