The School of Music and Theatre at Heidelberg University is a fully accredited member of the National Association of Schools of Music with six full-time and thirteen adjunct faculty members supporting 90 majors in four degree programs: BM in Music Education, BM in Performance, BA in Music with concentrations in Traditional and Popular Music, and a BA in Theatre with concentrations in Musical Theatre, Acting, and Production.
This position is a staff position within the School of Music and Theatre. supporting academic courses, ensembles and theatre productions. The candidate will support the HeiNotes show choir, HeiMonics Acapella ensemble, and all musical theatre productions in the 2021-22 theatre season. The ability to sight-read and perform a vast variety of musical styles is essential, along with strong communication and collaborative skills. The successful candidate should be a dynamic artist/teacher with a strong background in musical theatre styles and other performance elements.
The Staff Accompanist/Assistant Music Director position is for the 2021-22 Academic Year, starting August 14th through May 10th with the potential of renewal according to departmental need and performance evaluations. Any revisions to the position timeline will be mutually agreed upon by the candidate and Director of the School of Music and Theatre and shared with Heidelberg’s Human Resource Office.
The chosen candidate will further strengthen Heidelberg University’s reputation as both a premier place of study for future theatre professionals and as a place where audiences can experience transformative performances. The School of Music and Theatre produces musicals, plays, opera scenes, new work festivals, and collaborative performances engaging all students and ensembles within the school. In support of these engagements, the Staff Accompanist/Assistant Music Director will
- Serve as Assistant Music Director and Staff Accompanist for a minimum of one musical theatre production per semester, working closely with the music director to support individual and ensemble preparation and performance.
- Support HeiNotes and HeiMonic music ensembles, leading sectionals and ensemble rehearsals as well as individual coachings as arranged by the ensemble director.
- Support theatre coursework such as, MUS 167: Musical Theatre Style, MUS 051-058 Performance Class, THR 100-400 Theatre Performance and others with individual coachings and performances.
- Compensation is a combination of hourly and stipend based on project responsibilities.
A Bachelor’s Degree in music or theatre is required. Strong keyboard and sight reading skills are essential. Prior professional experience as an accompanist or music director is preferred. An ability to work with others in a collaborative work environment is required.
