The Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee at Heidelberg University creates educational opportunities for students, faculty, and staff to cultivate a more inclusive environment that nurtures the intellectual, personal, and professional development of underrepresented groups on Heidelberg’s campus, including those historically oppressed and marginalized students because of race, socioeconomic status, gender identity, gender expression, age, national origin, ethnicity, sexual identity, creed, culture, religion, and disability to help enable all students to lead a life of purpose with distinction.
Instead of a paid day off, the Heidelberg University community comes together on Martin Luther King Jr. Day for a Day ON! With specific development activities centered around the theme of diversity, awareness, acceptance and inclusion, the campus community participates in a series of workshops and programming designed to foster a deeper understanding of the theme. Following this; faculty, staff and students participate in community service activities both on- and off campus. Ultimately, the goal is to inspire long-lasting, positive change and a deeper appreciation and understanding for diversity, equity and inclusion, in the spirit of the life and messages of Dr. King.
Green Dot is an evidence-based bystander intervention program aimed at reducing and preventing dating violence, sexual violence, and stalking. The program equips participants with new actions and new ways of responding to a red dot situation.
To represent the various cultures on our campus, flags are hung within University Commons to support our diverse groups on campus (ex. LGBTQ) and any country that at least one of our current students are from. This serves as a welcoming sign to potential students, families, and the broader community. This also serves as a visible symbol that manifests Heidelberg’s commitment to “work together to understand and respect different cultures, religions, and lifestyles.”
